WHAT: What The Film Festival 2017
WHEN: June 24, 2017
WHERE: The Royal Cinema
It’s back! After a year of waiting you can finally go check out the wonderful and weird lineup of films at the What The Film Festival hosted by the Laser Blast Film Society! HOORAY! Last year there were some pretty good contenders for endurance films, and only a few patrons survived. Well, almost. I mean, I’m currently writing this so I survived. I think.
SO what is the What The Film Festival? It’s an annual collection of films that have been hand picked by programmers Peter Kuplowsky and Justin Decloux, that are strange and obscure but at the same time incredibly artistic. In my experience, this is where the underdog gems of the planet come to be screened.
It’s where I Am A Knife With Legs, and the magical comedy stylings of Bené, an international rockstar on the run from an assassin, became popularized in the fair city of Toronto. It’s where I was introduced to the stylistic genius of good/bad movies by Matt Farley and Motern Media with Don’t Let the Riverbeast Get You. I could go on and on.
Last year they also let me play a set of my own original tunes for a few people which was pretty nice considering I hadn’t performed in front of people in 10 years. I haven’t been invited back. But maybe you’ll find some other wacky singer this year!
I think this year I’m most excited for the Japanese Evil Dead remake. Apparently it took 20 years to create and it features a sexy bloody muscle man.
If you like underground hidden marvels, endurance films, completely underrated comedy gold and cult classics, then you should probably get tickets to What The Film Festival immediately. Or when they go on sale. Or at the door. Either way. Be there.
